Yalda Afsah is a Professor for Introduction to Artistic Work (Time-based Media) at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HFBK Hamburg). Her artistic practice focuses on cinematic constructions of filmed space, blending installation and exhibition design with contemporary art discourse. She is affiliated with the university’s Filmhaus and ICAT (Institute for Contemporary Art & Transfer), where her works have been showcased in major exhibitions and symposia.
Her research and creative output have been featured at international platforms such as the Locarno Film Festival, Berlinische Galerie, and New York Film Festival. Recent solo exhibitions include those at JOAN, Los Angeles (2023), Between Bridges, Berlin (2023), and Kunstverein München (2022). In 2023, she received the Hans Purmann Prize, underscoring her contributions to artistic innovation. A key academic initiative she participates in is the Cine*Ami*es symposium series celebrating 60 years of film education at HFBK, exploring themes like friendship networks in cinematic practice.
Her involvement in institutional projects includes the Redesign Democracy ballot box competition (2025) and collaborations with international partners like Goldsmiths, University of London.
