Omer Fast is a Professor of Film at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (HFBK Hamburg), where he contributes to the Department of Film’s tradition of avant-garde and auteur-driven practices. Born in Jerusalem in 1972, he holds a BA in English from Tufts University, a BFA in Visual Arts from the Boston Museum School, and an MFA from Hunter College, CUNY. His career spans exhibitions at major institutions like the Pinakothek der Moderne (Munich), the Whitney Museum (New York), and the Centre Pompidou (Paris).
Fast’s research and creative work focus on narrative complexity and documentary hybridization. Notable projects include the film Remainder (2016), an adaptation of Tom McCarthy’s novel, and Abendland (in post-production). His art explores themes of memory, labor, and subjective experience through immersive visual storytelling.
He has received prestigious awards such as the Bucksbaum Award (2008) for The Casting and the National Galerie’s Prize for Young Art (2009) for Nostalgia. At HFBK, he oversees film education and contributes to initiatives like the Cine*Ami*es symposium on friendship in cinema.
Fast’s academic and creative work intersects with interdisciplinary projects, including the Redesign Democracy ballot box competition and collaborations with international art schools like Goldsmiths, University of London.
