Angela Schanelec is a Professor of Narrative Film at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (HFBK Hamburg) since 2012. She studied drama and later film directing at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (DFFB), graduating with thesis film *Das Glück meiner Schwester* (1996), which won the Preis der deutschen Filmkritik. Her films, including *Mein langsames Leben* (2001), *Marseille* (2004), and *Nachmittag* (2007), established her as a key figure in the Berlin School of cinema. She co-founded production company Nachmittagfilm (2005) and has been honored with two Silver Bears: Best Director for *Ich war zuhause, aber* (2019) and Best Screenplay for *Music* (2023). Her work explores human experience, existential themes, and cinematic innovation.
Teaching at HFBK Hamburg’s Film Department, she emphasizes artistic auteur filmmaking and trains innovative filmmakers. Her films blend narrative depth with experimental techniques, reflecting her focus on social realism and psychological complexity.
