Stephen Henderson is a Professor of History at Acadia University, holding a tenure-track position since 2005. He teaches courses ranging from global history to Canadian political history, emphasizing primary source analysis and skill development in undergraduate courses while fostering critical engagement with historiography at advanced levels. His research explores federal-provincial relations in Canadian political history, with a focus on Nova Scotia’s political figures like Angus L. Macdonald and Robert Stanfield.
Education: BA and BEd (Acadia University, 1989/1991), MA (York University, 1996), PhD (York University, 2003). Postdoctoral work included a fellowship at the University of New Brunswick.
Research Interests: Canadian political history since the mid-19th century, federalism, biographies of political leaders, and colonial-era migration patterns. Current projects include a biography of Robert Stanfield and an edited autobiography of Peter S. Hamilton.
Editorial Roles: Co-editor of The Nova Scotia Planters in the Atlantic World, reviewer for major Canadian presses, and editorial board member of the Journal of the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society.
Teaching Highlights: Supervised notable honours theses addressing Indigenous reconciliation, military history, and genocidal policies. Teaches courses integrating labour history, youth culture, and Indigenous perspectives.
