J.P. Lewis is a Professor of political science and Chair of the Department of History and Politics at the University of New Brunswick Saint John. His research focuses on Canadian cabinet government, provincial and federal governance, and electoral systems. He holds a SSHRC Insight Grant (2022–2024) studying executive governance styles in Atlantic Canada with Dr. Erin Crandall.
Education includes a PhD in Political Science from Carleton University (2011), MA degrees in History (2004) and Political Science (2003) from the University of Guelph, and a BA (Honours) from the University of Waterloo (2002).
Research interests emphasize Canadian political institutions, particularly cabinet dynamics, electoral reforms, and the intersection of social media with governance. Recent publications analyze New Brunswick elections, executive responses to crises like the pandemic, and gender representation in political leadership.
Teaching includes courses on Canadian government, constitutional politics, and provincial politics. Media engagements include frequent commentary on CBC, CTV, and Global television.
