Stephen H. Wirls serves as Professor of Philosophy and Director of the PPE Program at Rhodes College, holding dual appointments in the Political Science department since 1994 and Philosophy department since 2021. He teaches foundational courses including Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, alongside advanced seminars in American Political Thought, Modern Political Philosophy, and Philosophy and Religion, with extensive involvement in the Search program.
His educational background features a B.A. from Kenyon College (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and M.A./Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University, where he previously taught alongside positions at Franklin and Marshall and Kenyon College.
Professor Wirls' research centers on American political thought with emphases on judicial power, presidential authority, and constitutional interpretation. His scholarship critically examines liberalism through Jefferson's civic education theories and Hamilton's political obligation concepts, while exploring conservative philosophy via Roger Scruton's work. Current research investigates Machiavellian political dynamics in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, analyzing intersections of religion and governance.
