Odysseus Makridis serves as Professor of Philosophy, Logic, and Ethics in the Department of Literature, Language, Writing, and Humanities at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), where he has taught since 2002 after prior roles as Lecturer at Brandeis University and Teaching Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
His educational background includes:
- PhD and Post-Doc from Brandeis University
- BA from Middlebury College
- SBALA Degree from Anatolia College, Greece
Makridis's research centers on foundational philosophical domains with emphasis on logical systems and ethical frameworks. His work spans Symbolic Logic (including volumes and an Internet Encyclopedia entry on the Sheffer Stroke), critical analyses of Epicurus, Plato, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein, and applied ethics in biomedical contexts and political theory. This interdisciplinary approach bridges classical philosophy with contemporary analytical methods, particularly evident in his teachings on Formal Logic, Metalogic of Functional Completeness, and Intuitionistic Logic.
His scholarly contributions manifest through publications in Ethics, Biomedical Ethics, and Political Philosophy, reflecting consistent engagement with both theoretical constructs like Truth and Space-Time, and practical applications in Healthcare Research Ethics and Philosophy of Law. Key thematic threads include the intersection of Wittgensteinian thought with contemporary analytic philosophy and the evolution of ethical frameworks in modern governance.
At FDU, Makridis developed and instructed diverse courses including Introduction to Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics of Healthcare Research, and Contemporary Analytic Philosophy. He previously held a three-year term as Department Chair, demonstrating administrative leadership alongside his academic responsibilities.
