John Gibson

John Gibson is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Louisville, specializing in aesthetics, philosophy of literature, philosophy of language, and philosophy of the self. He co-directs the TRT-funded project 'Aesthetic Cognitivism and the Prospects of Criticism' and serves on the steering committee of the PhD in Humanities program. His educational background includes a PhD from the University of Toronto (2001) and a BA from Indiana University-Bloomington (1993).

Gibson's research explores the unique forms of meaning in artworks and their implications for cultural, ethical, and cognitive dimensions of art. His scholarly interests bridge analytical philosophy and literary theory, with recent work focusing on poetic expression, selfhood in art, and Wittgensteinian approaches to interpretation.
