Stephen Mulhall is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford and the Russell H. Carpenter Fellow in Philosophy at New College. His academic career includes roles as a Prize Fellow at All Souls College and Reader in Philosophy at the University of Essex. He holds a D.Phil in Philosophy from Balliol College/All Souls College (1998), an MA from the University of Toronto (1984), and a first-class BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Balliol College, Oxford (1983).
His research focuses on post-Kantian continental philosophy (Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger), aesthetics (film and literature), and theology's intersection with philosophy. Recent publications include In Other Words: Transpositions of Philosophy in J.M. Coetzee's 'Jesus' Trilogy (2022) and The Ascetic Ideal (2021). His articles analyze topics like Wittgensteinian language, ethical vulnerability, and philosophical themes in cinema.
Mulhall teaches undergraduate courses in Moral Philosophy, Aesthetics, and Post-Kantian Philosophy, while graduate seminars address Heidegger, Nietzsche, and philosophy of film. His work bridges analytic and continental traditions, emphasizing interdisciplinary dialogue between philosophy, theology, and the arts.
