Daniel Cullen is Professor of Philosophy at Rhodes College and directs the Project for the Study of Liberal Democracy, which supports teaching and scholarship on constitutional government and Western philosophical traditions. He holds additional roles as Senior Fellow for Constitutional Studies at the Jack Miller Center for Teaching America’s Constitutional Principles and History, and serves on both the Center’s Academic Council and the board of the Association for Core Texts and Courses.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. from Boston College and an M.A. from Dalhousie University.
Cullen’s research centers on political philosophy with emphasis on liberal democracy, constitutionalism, and the history of political thought. He is recognized for expertise in political ideologies, liberalism and conservatism, freedom of speech, academic freedom, ethical dimensions of public policy, American constitutionalism, and civic education. His publications include Freedom in Rousseau's Political Philosophy and the edited volume Liberal Democracy and Liberal Education, with current work focused on Roger Scruton’s philosophy.
His notable awards include:

- Omicron Delta Kappa Teacher of the Year Award
Cullen actively contributes to campus life as faculty advisor for women’s varsity softball, men’s varsity soccer, and co-ed ice hockey teams, and currently coaches the Rhodes squash club.
