Dr. Stephen H. Savage is an affiliated Professor at Arizona State University's School of Human Evolution & Social Change and a Senior Fellow at the Capitol Archaeological Institute. With over 30 years in archaeology, he specializes in Near Eastern and North African studies, spatial analysis, and GIS applications. His fieldwork spans Jordan, Israel, Egypt, and the U.S., with notable projects including the Tell Madaba excavations and the Moab Archaeological Resource Survey.
Education:
- B.A. in Ancient Near Eastern Studies/Theology, Cincinnati Bible Seminary (1978)
- M.A. in Public Archaeology/Anthropology, University of South Carolina (1989)
- Ph.D. in Anthropology (Near Eastern Archaeology), University of South Carolina
His research focuses on early complex societies, Predynastic Egypt, and the Levantine Bronze Age. He pioneered innovative uses of GIS technology for archaeological analysis, developing systems like the Digital Archaeological Atlas of the Holy Land. Dr. Savage has directed the Geo-Archaeological Information Applications Lab, creating large-scale databases for archaeological resources. His current work examines modern human impact on ancient sites in Lebanon and Syria using satellite imagery.
Grants & Projects:
- Completed a NASA Space Archaeology grant analyzing satellite data for ancient settlement patterns
- Developed methodologies for the Arizona SHPO GIS network and the AZSite cultural resources inventory
He has taught at institutions including the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Eastern Mediterranean University, and Mesa Community College, and conducted international training workshops in Jordan, Greece, and Norway.
