Stephen G Cecchetti holds the Rosen Family Chair in International Finance at Brandeis International Business School and serves as a Senior Research Consultant at the Qatar Centre for Global Banking & Finance, King’s College London. He is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and Chair of the Advisory Scientific Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board. His expertise spans monetary policy, financial regulation, and central bank decision-making.
Education includes an undergraduate degree from MIT, a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel. Previously, he served as Economic Adviser and Head of the Monetary and Economic Department at the Bank for International Settlements (2008–2013), and Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1997–1999).
Research focuses on central bank policy challenges, financial stability frameworks, and global regulatory reforms post-2008 crisis. He authored a leading textbook in money and banking and blogs at www.moneyandbanking.com. He previously edited the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking (1992–2001).
Not currently accepting PhD students but actively mentors through institutional affiliations. His advisory role includes shaping policy via the European Systemic Risk Board and contributions to Basel Committee initiatives on banking supervision.
Associated with the Qatar Centre for Global Banking & Finance, which focuses on cutting-edge research in central bank policymaking, including monetary policy, financial stability, and regulatory frameworks.
