Pedro Duarte Neves

Pedro Duarte Neves is a Professor of Economics at Católica Lisbon – Business and Economics and an Affiliated Fellow at the Qatar Centre for Global Banking & Finance at King’s Business School. He holds a PhD in Economics from Université Catholique de Louvain, with research conducted at University College London, the Institute for Fiscal Studies, and the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics. His career includes roles as Vice-Governor of Banco de Portugal (2006–2017), Adviser to its Board of Directors, and Vice Chairman of the European Banking Authority (2013–2018). He has also chaired key committees at the European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs), FSB, and other regulatory bodies, focusing on financial stability, banking supervision, consumer protection, and financial innovation.

Neves’ research interests center on macro-prudential policy, central banking governance, banking sector resilience, and the interplay between financial systems and climate change. He publishes regularly in Central Banking, OMFIF, and SUERF, addressing topics such as debt sustainability, stress-testing frameworks, and the role of central banks in fostering social capital within ESG frameworks. His advisory roles include the European Banking Institute and the Systemic Risk Centre at LSE.

Professionally, Neves has served on the Deposit Guarantee Fund, Portuguese Resolution Fund, and ANACOM, demonstrating expertise in regulatory design and implementation. His recent work emphasizes forward-looking approaches to banking sector resilience, leveraging climate-risk assessments and innovative policy tools. The Qatar Centre for Global Banking & Finance, where he is affiliated, focuses on central bank policies in global contexts, aligning with his research on monetary policy and financial stability challenges.
