Stephen Eskildsen is a Professor of Religious Studies (Taoism) in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He was promoted to the endowed North Callahan Distinguished Professor position in 2012. Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan (1994–1998) and held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2013, he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg.

Research Interests: Eskildsen specializes in Taoist religious traditions, with additional expertise in Buddhism and Nestorianism. His work examines meditation practices and mystical experiences in historical Taoist texts, particularly from the Han to Tang dynasties. During his Käte Hamburger Kolleg fellowship, he focused on a book project exploring serenity-induced phenomena in Taoism.
