Professor Stephen Eichhorn serves as Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering, University of Bristol, and was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2025. He is globally recognized for pioneering research in cellulose-based materials and biobased composites, driving innovation in sustainable material development.
His research integrates advanced materials engineering with environmental sustainability, focusing on cellulose nanotechnology and composite manufacturing. This work has directly enabled new industrial products and processes while advancing equity initiatives through his EPSRC-funded fellowship supporting Black heritage scholars in composites research.
Key recognitions include:

- EPSRC ED&I Fellowship (2021) for promoting diversity in biobased composites
Professor Eichhorn leads the University of Bristol’s EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Composites while previously directing an engineering school at the University of Exeter and advising the Henry Royce Institute. His leadership extends to national strategy development in materials science and engineering education.
He actively cultivates inclusive research environments through dedicated fellowship programs and directs composite materials innovation initiatives addressing sustainable manufacturing challenges.
