Professor Stephen Connelly serves as Co-Director of GLOBE and Chair of the Philosophy and History of Legal Systems at the School of Law, University of Warwick. Based in room S1.06 of the Social Sciences Building in Coventry, United Kingdom, he maintains regular office hours on Tuesdays from 4-6pm.
Stephen's principal research interest lies in the philosophy and history of legal systems. His scholarly work spans from Ancient Near Eastern cosmological accounts through classical Greek and Roman legal philosophy to Early Modern philosophy and modern process theories of law. His analyses include studies of Sumerian lamentation, Plato, Epicurus, the early Stoa, Philo Judaeus, Spinoza, Leibniz, Scholem, Bergson, Whitehead, and Deleuze. In addition to his theoretical work, Stephen provides expert analysis on finance law, focusing on private law techniques used in this field.
Stephen is the author of the leading student textbook "Finance Law" (Routledge, 2025). His expertise has been recognized at governmental levels, as he has provided evidence to the UK Parliament and drafted legislation pertaining to sovereign debt. He actively welcomes PhD applications from students interested in researching continental legal philosophy, demonstrating his commitment to academic mentorship.
