Dr Alexander Darlington is an Assistant Professor in Control and Engineering Biology at the University of Warwick's School of Engineering, and a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow. His research focuses on advancing synthetic biology and microbial biotechnology through quantitative mathematical modeling to optimize industrial bioprocesses. He leads a multidisciplinary group developing frameworks to predict and control metabolic, gene expression, and growth dynamics in engineered microbes.
Education: MSci Natural Sciences (University of Cambridge, 2015), PhD Engineering (University of Warwick, 2018). Previous roles include a BBSRC Innovation Fellowship with Ingenza Ltd and postdoctoral research at Warwick under Prof. Declan Bates.
Research Interests: Combining systems biology, control engineering, and mathematical modeling to address bottlenecks in microbial cell factories. Key areas include:
- Predicting host-pathway interactions to improve strain design
- Dynamic resource allocation strategies for growth/production trade-offs
- Control systems for autonomous biomanufacturing
Recent Work: Published in Nature Communications (2025) and Journal of the Royal Society Interface (2025). Active in conferences like CDC2024 and SynBYSS, with collaborations across academia and industry (e.g., Ingenza Ltd).
