Stephen A. Mitchell is the Robert S. and Ilse Friend Professor of Scandinavian and Folklore at Harvard University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Scandinavian Studies and Folklore and Mythology. He holds positions in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and serves on committees such as the Committee on Medieval Studies and the Standing Committee on Archaeology. His research focuses on medieval Nordic culture, folklore, witchcraft, and memory studies, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between oral traditions and written records.
Education: B.A. in Anthropology and Scandinavian Languages from UC Berkeley and Lund University, Sweden; Ph.D. in Scandinavian Languages and Literatures from the University of Minnesota. Mitchell has directed Harvard’s Viking Studies Program in Scandinavia and curated the Milman Parry Collection of Oral Literature. He has held fellowships at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in Uppsala.
Research interests include medieval Nordic mythology, witchcraft and magic, charm magic, and memory studies. Notable works include Witchcraft and Magic in the Nordic Middle Ages (2011), Old Norse Folklore series (2023, 2025), and edited volumes like Handbook of Pre-Modern Nordic Memory Studies (2018). Awards include the Dag Strömbäck Prize, Walter Channing Cabot Fellowship, and an honorary doctorate from Aarhus University.
His work bridges literary, historical, and anthropological approaches, exploring themes such as cultural memory, performance, and the transmission of oral traditions. Mitchell’s interdisciplinary contributions have shaped scholarship on medieval Scandinavian culture and its legacy.
