Stephen Arthur Mitchell is the Robert S. and Ilse Friend Professor of Scandinavian and Folklore at Harvard University. He also serves as Curator of The Milman Parry Collection of Oral Literature and Chair of Folklore & Mythology. His academic roles include former Master of Eliot House (1991-2000) and resident tutor in Pforzheimer. Mitchell holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, with undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley and the University of Lund. He has received numerous accolades, including an honorary doctorate from Aarhus University and membership in The Royal Gustav Adolf Academy.
His research focuses on medieval Scandinavian culture, folklore, and pre-Christian religious practices. Notable works include Witchcraft and Magic in the Nordic Middle, Heroic Sagas and Ballads, and editorships of major volumes like Pre-Christian Religions of the North. He directs Harvard’s Viking Studies Program in Scandinavia, recognized as one of the nation’s most unique study abroad programs.
Mitchell actively participates in interdisciplinary committees, including Medieval Studies and Archaeology, and has contributed over 90 scholarly articles on Scandinavian literature and cultural history. His career spans four decades at Harvard, with deep involvement in student life and academic administration.
