Merrill Kaplan is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Center for the Study of Religion. She holds a Ph.D. in Scandinavian Studies from the University of California, Berkeley (2006). Her research focuses on Nordic mythology, medieval Icelandic and Scandinavian literature, folklore studies, and Scandinavian national romanticism. She teaches courses such as Nordic Mythology, Medieval Icelandic Saga, and Old Norse-Icelandic Language.
Her scholarly work explores topics like the supernatural in Icelandic sagas, Norwegian literature of the 19th century, and the intersection of Ibsen’s dramatic realism with folklore. She has published on themes including Out-Thoring Thor in the Great Saga of Olaf Tryggvason and the Icelandic reception of Ibsen’s The Vikings at Helgeland.
Kaplan’s expertise spans Old Norse-Icelandic literature, folklore studies both online and offline, and the cultural impact of medieval narratives. She is active in academic communities, with affiliations to the Department of English and the Center for the Study of Religion.
