Natalie Van Deusen, PhD, is a Professor of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts, where she also serves as Director of Undergraduate Programs. She holds the Henry Cabot and Linnea Lodge Scandinavian Professorship and is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of History & Classics. Her expertise spans Old Norse-Icelandic literature, medieval studies, hagiography, and disability studies. She teaches courses on Nordic history, literature, and folklore, including Old Norse Mythology and Legends, The Vikings, and Scandinavia Through Folklore.
Her research focuses on medieval Icelandic manuscripts, saints' lives, and gender studies. Notable projects include a SSHRC-funded study on miracles and disability in bishops' sagas and a monograph on St. Agnes of Rome in Icelandic verse. She has authored/co-authored over 20 articles and books, including editions of medieval texts and co-edited volumes.
Van Deusen has received the Killam Research Fund Award (2014) and supervises graduate students in MLCS and History, Classics, and Religion. She also serves as Editor for Scandinavian-Canadian Studies and contributes reviews to leading journals. Beyond academia, she teaches group exercise and spinning classes.
