David F. Elmer is the Eliot Professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University's Department of Classics and an affiliate faculty member in Comparative Literature. He has been a core member of the Classics faculty since 2007 and serves as Curator of the Milman Parry Collection of Oral Literature, a pivotal archive for South Slavic oral traditions.
- PhD in Comparative Literature (2005), Harvard University.
Elmer's research focuses on Homeric epics, ancient novels, and South Slavic oral epic song. His work bridges oral composition theory, narrative structure analysis, and ethical dimensions in classical and traditional literature. He explores how Homeric texts engage with tradition and how ancient novels subvert dominant narrative modes.
His recent publications (2024–2020) emphasize cross-cultural narrative analysis, digital archiving, and the interplay between structure and ethics in epic traditions. He also contributes reviews and editorial work to open-access journals like Oral Tradition.
Elmer is involved in Harvard's Standing Committee on Degrees in Folklore and Mythology, and he curates the Milman Parry Collection, which houses recordings and transcriptions of oral performances. His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses on Greek literature.
