Richard Martin holds the Anthony E. and Isabelle Raubitschek Professorship in Classics at Stanford University, where he has taught since 2005. Previously, he served on Princeton University's faculty for 18 years. His research focuses on Homeric religion, ancient epic poetry, and comparative literature.
Education: A.B. in Classics and Celtic Languages from Harvard University (1976), A.M. (1978) and Ph.D. (1981) in Classical Philology, all from Harvard.
Research interests include Homeric theology, Greek lyric poetry (Pindar, Sappho), oral tradition, and ancient performance studies. He is currently working on monographs about Homeric religion and comparative epic.
Recent publications (2020-2024) explore topics like Hesiodic theology, ancient comedy, and epic meter evolution. His work frequently engages with conceptual metaphor theory and intertextual dynamics in Greek literature.
Award-winning scholar with expertise in ancient Greek festivals, hero cults, and the intersection of myth and performance. Active in Stanford's Civic, Liberal, and Global Education program, contributing to introductory studies curricula.
