Stephanie E. Yuhl is a Professor of History and Director of Montserrat, a first-year interdisciplinary living/learning program, at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. She holds a PhD and MA from Duke University and a BA in American Studies from Georgetown University. Her research focuses on 20th-century U.S. social and cultural history, with emphases on Southern history, public history, memory studies, gender/sexuality, and social justice movements. Her award-winning book A Golden Haze of Memory: The Making of Historic Charleston examines Charleston’s cultural renaissance in the 1920s–1930s. She has also published extensively in The Journal of Southern History and The Public Historian.
Dr. Yuhl’s work has received the Green-Ramsdell Award for best article in The Journal of Southern History, recognizing her research on slavery’s public heritage. She actively serves on heritage-focused boards, including the National Council on Public History and multiple civic agencies, and consults for museums and preservation initiatives. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges historical scholarship with community engagement, emphasizing the role of heritage in shaping social justice and collective memory.
