Julia Eichelberger is a Professor of Southern Literature at the College of Charleston, where she has taught since 1992. She holds the Marybelle Higgins Howe Professorship and directs the interdisciplinary minor in Southern Studies. She is affiliated with the African American Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies programs and serves on the College's Center for the Study of Slavery Executive Board.
Her research explores themes in Southern literature, including African American and Jewish American narratives, Charleston writers, and postwar American fiction. Her recent publications focus on Gullah cultural heritage, historical memory, and the intersection of social justice with Charleston's slavery legacy.
Her scholarly work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, literary criticism, and public-facing writing. Articles highlight Southern folktales, pedagogical approaches to Eudora Welty’s works, and the ethical imperatives of historical accountability.
