Stephan Dudeck

Stephan Dudeck is a Research Fellow in Arctic Studies at the Laboratory of Arctic Studies, Institute of Cultural Research, University of Tartu (Estonia), holding a 0.50-time position. He also collaborates with the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland (Finland). His research focuses on Siberian indigenous communities, particularly reindeer herders in Western Siberia, examining their cultural resilience, adaptation to technological and environmental changes, and interactions with oil industries. He holds a Doctorate in Social Anthropology (2011, Leipzig University) and has conducted long-term fieldwork with Khanty and Nenets communities since 1993.

His academic career includes roles at institutions such as the Max Planck Institute, University of Lapland, and European University at Saint Petersburg. Dudeck’s work spans cultural anthropology, indigenous rights advocacy, and visual anthropology. Notable projects include documenting the Khanty Bear Feast and co-authoring guidelines for decolonial Arctic research. He has organized international conferences, workshops, and exhibitions, blending academic research with creative projects like ethnographic films and photo exhibitions.

Research interests include neo-traditional movements, indigenous knowledge preservation, and methodologies for ethical anthropology. His publications address topics such as reindeer pastoralism, gender asymmetries in Arctic communities, and the impact of industrialization on indigenous lifestyles. Dudeck actively contributes to collaborative initiatives like the ‘Gender in the Arctic’ network and the ‘CAFÉ’ thematic network, emphasizing interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approaches.
