Dominique Samson Normand de Chambourg serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Russian Studies at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO) in Paris. His academic work focuses on Siberian indigenous communities, particularly the Nenets people of the Arctic regions, with expertise in Slavic languages and literature (CNU Discipline 13). He teaches courses on Siberia, Shamanism, World Religions, and Gender Studies across multiple levels of the Russian Studies program.
His research interests span Russian-Indigenous interactions in the Arctic and North Siberia, Siberian religious practices including Shamanism and Orthodox Missions, Siberian independence movements, and life stories of northern communities. His work examines how indigenous Siberian cultures navigate modernity while maintaining traditional practices, particularly focusing on the Nenets language and cultural preservation in the face of industrial development and political change.
Analysis of his recent publications (2019-2025) reveals consistent thematic focus on Siberian indigenous agency, with particular attention to Nenets communities. His work bridges anthropology, linguistics, and political geography, examining how Siberian peoples construct identity in relation to Moscow, navigate oil development impacts, and preserve cultural memory through oral traditions and writing systems.
Samson Normand de Chambourg has served in significant administrative roles including President of the CSIE (2016-2019), Acting Director of the Department of Russian Studies (2016), and Head of Master's Teaching (2013-2020). He is an elected member of the 13th section of the CNU since 2016 and the Council of the Department of Russian Studies since 2013.
He actively supervises doctoral and master's students, with recent thesis topics covering Siberian indigenous cultures, gender relations, religious practices, and literary traditions. His students' work frequently examines Khanty, Nenets, and Mansi communities across multiple disciplines including anthropology, linguistics, and religious studies.
As a member of the CREE research team at INALCO and LAEIZS at Tomsk State University, he collaborates on Siberian studies projects. He also serves on the editorial boards of multiple academic journals including Slovo, Études Mongoles et Sibériennes, Slavica Occitania, and Études Finno-Ougriennes, contributing to the scholarly infrastructure for Siberian and Arctic studies.
