Marjorie Mandelstam Balzer is a Research Professor at Georgetown University's Department of Anthropology and a Faculty Fellow at the Berkley Center. She has been affiliated with Georgetown since 1987, holding roles in the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies (CERES) and the Berkley Center. She co-convenes the Indigenous Studies Working Group and edits the journal Anthropology and Archeology of Eurasia. Her research focuses on the intersections of religion, politics, ecology, human rights, and indigenous activism, particularly in Siberia, Central Asia, and the Circumpolar North.
Her notable work includes the book Galvanizing Nostalgia: Indigeneity and Sovereignty in Siberia (2021), analyzing indigenous activism and sovereignty. She has been featured in media discussions on Siberian protest movements and Soviet/post-Soviet indigeneity. Balzer's career includes Doyle Faculty Fellowships and grants supporting fieldwork in Siberian republics.
