Stefano Ciaffoni serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Bologna, where he has conducted research since 2020. He concurrently holds a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (March 2024–present) under Supervisor Silvia Moscatelli and is an active member of the Koc Social Identities Lab. His academic foundation includes a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Bologna (2020–2024; Excellent cum laude), a Master’s in Applied Social Psychology from the University of Groningen (2019–2020), and a Bachelor’s in Psychological Sciences from the University of Bologna (2015–2018).
His research centers on social psychology dynamics within disadvantaged groups, with specialized focus on sexual minorities, gender inequality, and stigma. Key investigations examine how perceptions of gender discrimination impact women’s professional aspirations and support for equality, alongside studies on consensual non-monogamy stigma and intergroup solidarity among marginalized communities. His methodological approach integrates social identity theory with cross-cultural comparisons, often involving international collaborations with institutions like the University of Queensland and Australian National University.
Analysis of his 2021–2025 publications reveals consistent thematic progression from foundational work on pandemic responses (2021) toward sophisticated examinations of gender inequality measurement (2025 STEW Scale validation) and intersectional stigma. His output demonstrates increasing methodological rigor, with recent studies employing multi-country samples and advanced psychometric techniques to explore links between internalized prejudice, collective action, and social change.
Notable recognition includes the 2024 AIP Best Poster Award, Erasmus+ Traineeship funding, and multiple travel grants from EASP/SPSP. He secured a 2022 Principal Investigator grant from the Italian Association of Psychology for his project on gender inequality perceptions.
As an educator, Ciaffoni serves as Teaching Assistant for Social Psychology courses and delivers guest lectures on sexual minority stigma at universities including Florence and Bologna. His research leadership extends to ERC Advanced Grant MULTIPREV participation and coordination of third-mission initiatives like the European Night of Researchers events addressing prejudice through interactive workshops.
He maintains active roles in the Koc Social Identities Lab and SPRinG+ European network, complemented by professional service as Frontiers in Psychology Review Editor and E-CARE Representative for early-career researchers in the Italian Association of Psychology.
