Stefan G. Schmid serves as Professor of Public Law with a focus on Constitutional Law at the University of St. Gallen's Law School since February 1, 2019. He is Co-Leader of the Competence Center for the History of Public Law, Chair of the Doctoral Program Commission in Legal Studies (DLS), and member of the University of St. Gallen Research Commission.
His research focuses on state organization law with consideration of foreign public law, as well as modern constitutional history and political philosophy. Professor Schmid examines topics including constitutional referendums, parliamentary procedures, and the international influence of Swiss political institutions. His work bridges theoretical constitutional frameworks with practical governance issues.
Professor Schmid's recent publications analyze the concept of an 'unwritten' mandatory referendum on international treaties, parliamentary declarations across historical and political contexts, and the historical transfer of referendum systems from Switzerland to America. His research demonstrates interdisciplinary connections between constitutional law, political history, and comparative governance.
