Prof. Dr. Stefan G. Schmid is a Full Professor of Public Law with a specialization in Constitutional Law at the University of St. Gallen, affiliated with the Law School. He holds a lic. iur. (1998) and Dr. iur. (2003) from the University of Zurich, followed by a habilitation in 2017. His career includes roles as a research assistant, legal officer in cantonal/federal institutions, and assistant professor at the University of Bern (2008–2014). He served as a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley in 2010 and became a full professor at St. Gallen in 2019. He co-directs the Centre for the History of Public Law and leads the PhD program in Law (DLS).
His research focuses on State Organization Law (federalism/democracy), Comparative Public Law, and Constitutional History, with interdisciplinary ties to political philosophy. Recent work includes studies on mandatory referendums for international treaties and parliamentary declarations in Swiss/EU contexts. He co-teaches the innovative HSG im Bundeshaus course, offering students hands-on parliamentary simulation experiences with federal officials.
Prof. Schmid advises theses in constitutional law and public policy, supervising students through structured research proposals. He collaborates with assistants like Luca Müller and Cédric Schad, leading a team based at the Chair of Public Law in St. Gallen. His affiliations include the Swiss Society for Constitutional Law and editorial roles in legal journals.
