Nick Kilford is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Durham Law School, focusing on constitutional law, devolution, and federalism. His work examines unwritten constitutional norms, legislative authority interactions, and the UK's evolving constitutional framework. He is affiliated with the Open Research Area-funded study on Unwritten Constitutional Norms and Principles, led by Professor Se-shauna Wheatle.
Education: LLB and MJur from Durham Law School; PhD from St Edmund's College, Cambridge (thesis on devolution and parliamentary sovereignty). Taught constitutional law at Cambridge colleges and supervised students via the Norfolk-Cambridge Higher Aspirations scheme.
Research interests include sub-state governance, federal principles, and the impact of centralization/decentralization on constitutional orthodoxies. Recent publications address the Northern Ireland Protocol, UK Internal Market Act implications, and devolution competence boundaries.
Consultancy experience includes advising on constitutional matters. Active in legal commentary via blogs and reports, including analysis of the Supreme Court’s rulings on devolution and parliamentary sovereignty.
Grants and collaborations: Open Research Area-funded project. Engaged in debates on retained EU law, human rights reform, and constitutional balance between Westminster and devolved legislatures.
