He has been teaching at the department since 2006 and serves as Managing Director of the European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan (ERCCT), a CCK Foundation Overseas Center.
Braig's research focuses on Taiwan's domestic politics, particularly elections, local and party politics, and the KMT's local organization and work style. His work examines Taiwan's political identity formation, cross-strait relations, and the emergence of intra-party phenomena like the "bentupai" or Taiwan-faction within the KMT.
As part of his academic activities, Braig coordinates the interdisciplinary master's degree course on East Asian Politics and Society at the Department of Chinese and Korean Studies. He was previously a member of the executive board of the European Association of Taiwan Studies from 2010-2014.
Stefan Braig completed his Magister Artium in Chinese Studies and Political Science at the University of Tübingen in 2006. His Master's thesis analyzed Chinese foreign policy discourse in PRC print media from 1999-2003.
His major publications demonstrate expertise in Taiwan's political landscape, with articles published in the Routledge Handbook of Contemporary Taiwan (2016), Taiwanese Identity in the 21st Century (2011), and Journal of Current Chinese Affairs (2010). His research consistently explores the complex interplay between local politics, party dynamics, and cross-strait relations in Taiwan.
Braig serves as Managing Director of the European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan (ERCCT) and has contributed significantly to Taiwan studies through his teaching and research. His PhD project investigates the GMD-bentupai's political identity and strategies in Taiwan's local politics and its relationship with the Green Camp parties.
