Stefan Berger is Professor of Social History at Ruhr-Universität Bochum since October 2011, with prior professorships at the University of Manchester (2005-2011), University of Glamorgan (2000-2005), and University of Wales, Cardiff (1991-2000). Elected to the Academy of Europe in 2021 (History & Archaeology section), his work bridges German and European historical scholarship.
His research centers on industrial heritage and deindustrialisation studies, examining how industrial decline reshapes communities. He investigates British-German relations through comparative nationalism, labor movements, and memory studies, with particular focus on the historiography of nation states and social history's evolution in modern Europe.
