Prof. Dr. Stefan Berger is a Professor of Social History and Director of the Institute for Social Movements at Ruhr-Universität Bochum since 2011. He concurrently serves as Executive Chair of the Foundation History of the Ruhr and Honorary Professor at Cardiff University, UK. His research focuses on social movements, deindustrialization, industrial culture, and memory studies, with particular attention to German-British relations. He has authored or edited over 30 books, including influential volumes such as Industrial Heritage and Regional Identities (2020) and History and Belonging (2018). His work bridges historical scholarship and public engagement, exploring how industrial heritage shapes regional identities and economic revitalization strategies. Berger’s recent projects examine the 'unitary mindscape' of industrial heritage in the Ruhr region and its implications for memory and regional transformation.
