Stefan Berger

Prof. Dr. Stefan Berger serves as Director of the Institute for Social Movements and Chairman of the Executive Board of the History of the Ruhr Foundation at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. His research focuses on modern European history, labor movements, industrial heritage, and national identity formation. Active in public history initiatives, he leads projects connecting industrial heritage with regional identity in the Ruhr area.

His work bridges academic and public spheres through edited volumes exploring social movements, nationalism, and memory studies. Key publications include Writing the History of Nationalism (2019) and Industrial Heritage and Regional Identities (2020). He regularly lectures on topics like deindustrialization and the transformation of former industrial regions.
