Christian Kleinschmidt is a Professor of Economic and Social History at Philipps University of Marburg since 2009. He previously held professorships at the University of Paderborn (2007-2009) and WHU Koblenz-Vallendar (2006). He has extensive experience in academic leadership roles including Deputy Chair at the University of Dortmund (2005-2007) and Senior Assistant positions at Ruhr University Bochum (2000-2004). His research focuses on transnational economic relations, business history, and comparative economic systems. Kleinschmidt completed his habilitation in 1999 with a thesis on German entrepreneurs' perceptions of American and Japanese management practices (1950-1985), and earned his PhD in 1992 on the Ruhr region's steel industry rationalization strategies. He has held visiting professorships in Japan and the US.

His research interests span global economic histories, comparative consumer culture, and strategic foreign trade relationships. Notable recent work includes studies on German-Turkish economic relations (2012-2013), food security in 19th century globalization contexts (2021), and analyses of innovation systems in China. He serves on editorial boards for the Journal of Business History and chairs the Scientific Advisory Board of the Society for Business History (Gesellschaft für Unternehmensgeschichte).
His scholarship combines transnational perspectives with detailed institutional analysis, emphasizing how businesses negotiate security and economic threats across historical periods. Recent projects include exploring Cold War-era industrial policy and the transformation of consumer protection mechanisms internationally.

- Project leader for Volkswagen Foundation-funded research on intercultural understanding (1997-1999)

He is affiliated with the Working Group on Industrial Culture in Central Hesse and contributes to policy-oriented historical research through regional management initiatives.
