Dr. Stacey Gutkowski is a Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) in Peace and Conflict Studies at King’s College London, affiliated with the School of Security Studies and the Department of War Studies. She is a member of the Centre for the Study of Divided Societies and leads the Templeton Religion Trust’s SCORE initiative on Religion and Peacebuilding. Her research focuses on intersections between religion, secularism, and conflict in the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on political sociology and critical security studies. Dr. Gutkowski holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and has held roles at institutions such as the University of Sussex and Arizona State University.
Her education includes a BA in Philosophy (magna cum laude) from Wellesley College, an MPhil in International Peace Studies from Trinity College Dublin, and a PhD in International Studies from Cambridge. She has authored books such as Religion, War and Israel’s Secular Millennials (2020) and Secular War (2014), and has published widely on Middle Eastern conflicts, secularism, and peacebuilding.
Research interests include the role of religion in peacebuilding, secularism in Middle Eastern politics, and grassroots conflict resolution. She advises on initiatives like the Nonreligion and Secularity Research Network and sits on the SCORE Advisory Council. Her work bridges academic research with policy impacts, emphasizing field-based studies in regions like Jordan, Israel/Palestine, and Lebanon.
