Gunning’s research focuses on political mobilization and violence in the Middle East, particularly Lebanon, Egypt, and Palestine. He explores the interplay between Islamist movements, religion, and authoritarian repression, advancing a dynamic interpretation of social movement theory. His ongoing projects include the ‘Bringing in the Other Islamists’ (TOI) initiative, comparing Sunni and Shia Islamism, and a collaboration with Dima Smaira on everyday peace practices in Beirut’s Southern Suburbs.
His recent publications analyze sectarian dynamics, urban security practices, and political responses to conflict in Gaza, Egypt, and Lebanon. These works integrate sociology, anthropology, and political geography to address topics like anti-austerity riots, transnational Islamist networks, and democratization under occupation.
- Scientific Awards: British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow
Gunning welcomes PhD applications on themes including political violence, religious secular ideologies, and everyday state practices in the Middle East. He has led major research projects funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, Leverhulme Trust, and ISRF Independent Social Research Foundation.
