Dr Michael Farquhar is a Lecturer in Middle East Politics at the Department of Political Economy, School of Politics & Economics, King's College London. His academic journey includes a PhD in Government from the London School of Economics and Political Science, an MA in Near and Middle Eastern Studies from SOAS, and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Cambridge.

His research focuses on Sociology of Islam (including Salafism, Islamic education, and religious transnationalism), Crime, Policing and Prisons, Political Violence, and the History and Politics of the Modern Middle East (Egypt and Saudi Arabia). Recent work explores the neoliberal security state and policing history in Egypt, with a transnational approach to Islamic missionary activities.
Key themes in his publications include Wahhabi missionary networks, Salafi educational infrastructure, police institutional analysis, and transnational religious economies. His 2016 book Circuits of Faith received international recognition.
Scientific achievements include an Honourable Mention from the International Studies Association (2017) for his book. He contributes to journals like International Political Sociology, City and Society, and International Journal of Middle East Studies.
Michael Farquhar supervises PhD research in Sociology of Islam, Salafism, Islamic education, political violence, and Middle Eastern politics. He participates in the Comparative Politics Research Group, Global South Research Group, and Historical Political Economy Research Group at King's College London.
