Sria Chatterjee

Sria Chatterjee is an Associate Scholar at the 4A Laboratory of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz (Max Planck Institute for Art History) in Florence, Italy. The institute, founded in 1897 and part of the Max Planck Society since 2002, is dedicated to art historical research in transcultural and global perspectives.

Her research focuses on the intersection of art, design, and political ecology in twentieth-century South Asia. She examines how ideas of nature were embedded in artistic practices and aesthetic discourses, particularly in relation to nation-making processes in pre- and post-independence India. Her work centers on the Santiniketan-Sriniketan project in Bengal and the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, exploring transnational networks connecting India with Japan, Britain, and the United States. Her approach combines art historical methods with insights from environmental humanities, colonial studies, and transnational history.
