Dr. Spyros Schismenos is a Lecturer in Humanitarian Engineering at RMIT University's School of Engineering, co-leading the Humanitarian Engineering Lab. He specializes in Disaster Management, Renewable Energy, Gamification in Learning, and Community Engagement. His research emphasizes innovative solutions at the nexus of human-centered design and appropriate technology, such as the 'Engineering WITH People' board game series. Prior roles include Casual Academic positions at the University of Technology Sydney and Western Sydney University, and research roles in Taiwan and the U.S. He collaborates globally with organizations like UNESCO, NGOs, and government bodies to address climate resilience and social justice. His work spans multiple continents, focusing on vulnerable communities and sustainable development.
Education and Career: Before joining RMIT, Schismenos worked as a Research Assistant at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology in Taiwan, focusing on soil and water resources. He also co-founded a company in emergency technology in Los Angeles. His academic background includes studies in disaster management and engineering.
Research Interests: Schismenos' work integrates humanitarian practices with renewable energy, flood resilience, and gamification. He advocates for participatory approaches and community-led solutions to enhance disaster preparedness and sustainable development. Key projects include off-grid hydropower systems and serious games for community needs assessment.
Grants and Advising: Open to supervising Masters and PhD students in areas like climate justice and environmental impact assessments. His supervision projects include studies on Bangladesh's wet cities and mining EIA processes.
