Spencer Piston is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Boston University and a Visiting Scholar at the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University. His research focuses on the politics of oppression in the United States, examining intersections of race, class, public opinion, political behavior, elections, the welfare state, and the criminal justice system.

His book Class Attitudes in America (Cambridge University Press, 2018) challenges conventional wisdom about American political attitudes toward redistribution. He has published in leading journals including American Political Science Review and Perspectives on Politics. Research funding includes grants from the Social Science Research Council, Time-Sharing Experiments in the Social Sciences (TESS), and Boston University's Institute for Health System Innovation & Policy.
