Spencer Piston is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Boston University and a Visiting Scholar at the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University. His research focuses on the politics of oppression in the United States, examining intersections of race, class, public opinion, political behavior, elections, the welfare state, and the criminal justice system.

His book Class Attitudes in America (Cambridge University Press, 2018) challenges conventional wisdom about American political attitudes toward redistribution. He has published in leading journals including American Political Science Review and Perspectives on Politics. Awards include the Distinguished Junior Scholar recognition from the Political Psychology Section of APSA, along with honors from APSA's LGBT Caucus and State Politics and Policy Section.
Research funding includes grants from the Social Science Research Council, Time-Sharing Experiments in the Social Sciences (TESS), and Boston University's Institute for Health System Innovation & Policy. He has held affiliations with institutions such as the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy (University of Michigan) and the Campbell Institute (Syracuse University).
