Megan Stewart is an Associate Professor of Public Policy at the University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and holds an affiliation with the Department of Political Science. Her research focuses on how social, economic, and political hierarchies shift—particularly along racial, gender, class, or ethnic lines—within contexts of war or political violence. She employs quantitative, qualitative, and experimental methods in her analysis.
Education includes a PhD in Government from Georgetown University (2016) and a BA in Politics and Journalism from New York University (2010). Her book Governing for Revolution explores why some rebel groups engage in transformative governance during conflict. Her work has been recognized with awards such as the 2018 Walter Isard Best Dissertation Award and an Honorable Mention in the APSA Conflict Processes Section (2016).
Stewart’s research appears in journals like International Organization, Comparative Political Studies, and Journal of Conflict Resolution, and has been featured in media outlets like the Washington Post. Her current projects analyze rebel governance, civil war dynamics, and the intersection of social hierarchies and violence.
