Dara Kay Cohen is a Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. She specializes in political violence, gender and conflict, and qualitative research methods. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and an A.B. from Brown University. Her research focuses on civil war dynamics, sexual violence in conflict, and state legitimacy in weak governance contexts. Cohen’s work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, United States Institute of Peace, and others. She is affiliated with Harvard’s Ash Center, Center for International Development, and Women and Public Policy Program.
Her acclaimed book Rape During Civil War (2016) received multiple awards, including the Theodore J. Lowi First Book Award. Her second book, Lynching and Local Justice (2020), explores vigilantism in Haiti and South Africa. Cohen serves on editorial boards for journals like International Security and Political Science Research and Methods.
