Elisabeth King is the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professor of International Education & Politics at New York University, and Founding Director of NYU's interdisciplinary minor in Peace and Conflict Studies. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto and conducted postdoctoral research at Columbia University. Her research focuses on building inclusive institutions and identities in ethnically diverse and conflict-affected regions, employing methods ranging from qualitative interviews to randomized field experiments. Key works include Diversity, Violence, and Recognition (Oxford UP, 2020), winner of the 2022 ISA Best Book Award, and From Classrooms to Conflict in Rwanda (Cambridge UP, 2014).
King's research emphasizes practical policy linkages, with funded projects supported by the United States Institute of Peace, Spencer Foundation, and others. Her fieldwork spans Kenya, Liberia, the Philippines, and Rwanda. She advises organizations such as UNICEF and USAID on post-conflict peacebuilding, education in crises, and community-driven development.
Her academic contributions bridge theory and practice, addressing themes like youth engagement in fragile states, education's role in conflict dynamics, and innovative peacebuilding strategies (e.g., social gastronomy). Recent work explores how education programs shape hope among marginalized youth in Nairobi and Karachi.
