Dr. Avner Cohen is a Professor in the Graduate School of International Policy and Management at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies and a Senior Fellow at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS). He maintains significant academic affiliations including a decade-long association with the Center for International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland and serves on the J-street Advisory Board and Daisy Alliance board.
Dr. Cohen earned his undergraduate degree in Philosophy and History from Tel Aviv University (1975), an M.A. in Philosophy from York University (1977), and a Ph.D. from the Committee on History of Culture at the University of Chicago (1981). His academic career includes positions in the philosophy department at Tel Aviv University (1983-1991), visiting professorships at multiple American universities, and the Forchheimer Visiting Professorship at Hebrew University (2005).
His research focuses on nuclear history, nonproliferation, and Israeli nuclear policy, with particular expertise in Israel's nuclear program development and the concept of 'nuclear opacity.'
