Steven Cohen is the Senior Vice Dean of Columbia University's School of Professional Studies and a Professor in the Practice of Public Affairs at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). He also directs the Master of Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy at SIPA, the Master of Science in Sustainability Management at the School of Professional Studies, and the Earth Institute's Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management.

Cohen's research focuses on sustainability, environmental policy, public management, and sustainability management. His work addresses the transition to a cleaner economy and the implementation of sustainable practices in urban environments. He has authored several books including The Sustainable City and Understanding Environmental Policy, and writes a weekly blog for the Earth Institute's State of the Planet website.
His notable awards include:
- Ford Foundation Fellow in Urban Environmental Policy (1976-77)
- Rockefeller Foundation Fellow in Public and Environmental Policy and Implementation (1978-79)
As a program director, Cohen advises students in Columbia's environmental and sustainability management programs. He also serves on several boards including Homes for the Homeless, the Willdan Group, Inc., the Advisory Board of the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment, and the Steering Committee for the Porter School of Environmental Studies at Tel Aviv University. Additionally, he chairs the Lotos Club’s Science and Technology Committee and serves on the Judging Committee for the Yidan Prize Foundation.
Cohen is actively involved with the Earth Institute, where he previously served as Executive Director and now acts as a senior advisor. He has also served on numerous boards and committees, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Advisory Council on Environmental Policy and Technology.
