Dr. Alice Cohen is a Professor of Environmental Science at Acadia University, specializing in environmental geography, water governance, and political ecology. She holds a B.A. (Honors) in International Development from McGill University, an M.A. and Ph.D. in Resource Management and Environmental Studies from the University of British Columbia, and completed a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship in Geography at Clark University.
Her research focuses on scales and boundaries in environmental policy, particularly transboundary water governance between Canada and the U.S. She has authored/co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including influential works on watershed governance and rescaling theory. Cohen’s work has been published in journals like Environment and Planning A, Water Alternatives, and Progress in Human Geography, and she has contributed to edited volumes like Water Without Borders? and Negotiating Water Governance.
Cohen teaches courses on sustainability leadership, environmental policy, and legal frameworks for environmental science. She has secured grants totaling over $100,000 from SSHRC and the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation for projects on ecosystem governance and northern resource development. Her community service includes former board membership in the Canadian Water Resources Association and peer review for journals like Environment and Planning C.
Her presentations span international conferences, including the Association of American Geographers and the Canadian Association of Geographers.
