Michael A Cohen is a Professor of International Affairs and Director of the PhD in Public and Urban Policy program at The New School's Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment. He also holds a role at the Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs. Cohen earned his PhD in Political Economy from the University of Chicago in 1971. His career includes a 27-year tenure at the World Bank, where he shaped urban policy frameworks and advised on sustainable development initiatives. He has authored/co-edited influential books such as Preparing the Urban Future (2012) and Argentina’s Economic Growth and Recovery (2012), focusing on urban dynamics, global economic crises, and environmental sustainability.
Research interests span urban policy, infrastructure development, and Latin American economics. He has advised over fifty countries on sustainable development and is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Panel on Urban Dynamics. Cohen teaches courses on critical multilateralism, urban policy, and infrastructure politics at The New School. His academic contributions bridge theoretical frameworks with practical policy solutions for global urban challenges.
